Ra’s family??knows this all too well. The beautiful English Mastiff, who was only five years old,??sadly lost his fight with??cancer in April. Ra’s family was able to??provide him with the best treatment and care during his battle and the Petplan Team is happy that we were able to be there to support Ra and his family through their battle.??Ra’s family has generously shared their beloved pet’s story with Petplan and we are sharing it with all pet lovers in Ra’s memory, celebrating his life and recognising the true value of an animal’s life.
Remembering Ra

I would like to tell you about Ra my beloved English Mastiff. I purchased him from a breeder in Mackay in Queensland at 18 months. He was already 85 kgs!
Ra was one of those dogs that when you met him whether you were a true blue cat lover he could convert you into a true blue dog lover. He was the most gentle dog I have ever known. He just loved you, with his big brown droopy eyes looked at you. Well I thought I would consider insurance for the big boy knowing that if he ever became ill, it was going to be at least a second mortgage to get him well.
Well the time had come and Ra fell ill with mast cell tumors (cancer), with thanks to my insurance with Petplan he went in to have a $3000 operation then home with antibiotics and pain medications which cost even more. This was all covered, thank God, by Petplan. Not long later he had more tumors come so we enlisted the services of an oncologist to provide him with chemotherapy and several operations to remove these insidious cancers which spanned over??a two year period. Following this Ra underwent??two additional rounds of chemotherapy plus he had many trips to his regular vet for check ups. Ra finally succumbed to this dreadful cancer in April. He was at home in a quiet spot in the lounge room with his mate scruff and family with him. He was 5.
My story is that Ra would, most likely, never had survived the time that I had with him, if I didn’t have the insurance cover with Petplan. Even though after the first claim the monthly payment did go up, the??overall the amount that the insurance company paid out was extraordinary. My monthly payments didn’t even come close to what Petplan covered for my Ra. Petplan paid around $15,000 in the first year and close to that in the second year. I’m not an advocate for Insurances at all, except??when it comes to insuring your loved family pet against illness or injury. It makes the choice for interventions to help cure or delay illness so much easier. When my vet said “I think you should see an Oncologist to get chemo for your 111 kg dog,” I was like, “Sure – who and where?”, as I knew I was covered. One tablet alone was $500.??
Thank you Petplan for letting me have my beautiful Ra for another two years. Now he has gone across the rainbow bridge and is cancer free. I cant wait to see him again. RIP big boy.
