Guide to the Royal Melbourne Show

The Royal Melbourne Show is just around the corner and we???re bringing you everything you need to know about the All Breeds Championship Dog Show. Whether you are a veteran of the Show or a beginner, Petplan has you covered for the entire 9 days of competition and entertainment!

With almost 4,000 entrants spread across over 200 breeds, there will be immense competition from the 17th of September to the 25th of September. There will be a wide variety of pooches on display this year with judges assessing a number of attributes including agility, conformation, appearance, and obedience.

At the conclusion of the Royal Melbourne Show All Breeds Championship Dog Show, the pavilion will be taken over by the Royal Melbourne Show Cat Championship which will be held on Monday the 26th and Tuesday the 27th of September. This will feature a wide range of felines being judged on everything from their claws to their whiskers, with their owners vying for a coveted blue ribbon.

 

Classes:

Dog shows are divided into classes, which separate dogs by age, sex, and level. At an Australian Dog Show you are likely to find the following classes:

  • Baby Puppy ??? 3 to 6 months old
  • Minor Puppy ??? 6 to 9 months old
  • Puppy ??? 6 to 12 months
  • Junior ??? 9 to 18 months
  • Intermediate ??? 18 to 36 months
  • Australian Bred ??? 6 months or over bred in Australia
  • Open ??? 6 months or over
  • Breeders Group Class -6 months or over

 

Groups:

Dogs are referred to in groups which is based on what they were originally bred for. For example, Labradors are grouped with the Gundogs because they were originally bred to retrieve.

  • Group 1 ??? Toys: e.g. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Maltese, and Yorkshire Terrier
  • Group 2 ??? Terriers: e.g. Scottish Terrier & Jack Russell Terrier
  • Group 3 ??? Gundogs: e.g. Golden Retriever & Labrador
  • Group 4 ??? Hounds: e.g. Beagle, Whippet, & Dachshund
  • Group 5 ??? Working Dogs: e.g. Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Kelpie, German Shepherd, and Border Collie
  • Group 6 ??? Utility: e.g. Boxer, Alaskan Malamute, and Dobermann
  • Group 7 ??? Non Sporting: e.g. Boston Terrier, Great Dane, and the Poodles

Main Events:

Conformation Judging (all breeds): 17th ??? 23rd September

All show dogs will be put through their paces in front of local and international judges as they compete for a range of titles including; Best Breed and Best in Show.

 

Action Dogs ??? Obedience Trial: 17th September

This event will test the intelligence, loyalty, and obedience of these canines

Dogs Advance Sweepstakes Day: 18th September

This sees all dogs compete in a number of Sweepstakes Classes including Baby Puppy (aged between 3 and 6 months), Puppy (aged between 6 and 12 months), Champion Neutered, Veterans (aged between 7 and 10 years), and Veterans (10 years and over).

 

Best in Show: 24th September

The prestigious Best in Show will be presented at the All Breeds Day in the Dog Precinct along with Best Puppy in Show, Best Baby Puppy in Show, Best Breeders Group, and Junior Showman.

 

Agility and Jumping: 25th September

This exciting competition will see dogs put through their paces as they race through the course while being assessed on their speed, skills, and obedience.
