What can you feed your pet?

We all know the face we get from our pet when there is food around, especially dogs. It’s a face that wants to try exactly what we’re having and sometimes irresistible when they give you the puppy dog eyes. However, do you really know what human foods you can feed your cat or dog? Petplan will take you through what is appropriate to share with your four-legged friends…

What can I feed my dog?

  • Bread in small amounts is fine (no spices or raisins)
  • Cashews can be a great treat, however only feed them a few at a time
  • Cheese is fine, as long as your dog isn’t lactose intolerant
  • Coconut is not only good for dogs, it can help with bad breath and clearing up skin conditions
  • Eggs are fine for dogs as long as they’re fully cooked all the way through
  • Fish is a great source of protein but should never be served to dogs raw or undercooked
  • Honey is excellent for dogs and can have a number of health benefits
  • Peanut butter is a great treat and contains healthy fats for your dog
  • Prawns are fine to feed to your dog, however, the shell, tail and head should all be removed and the prawn needs to be fully cooked

What can’t I feed my dog?

  • Almonds can block the oesophagus or tear the windpipe if not chewed properly
  • Chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs!
  • Cinnamon can irritate the dog’s mouth and make them uncomfortable and sick, or potentially lower their blood sugar and lead to a number of problems
  • Garlic and onions are extremely toxic and can cause serious health problems in your dog
  • Macadamia nuts are some of the most toxic foods dogs can eat
  • Coffee or caffeinated products should never be fed to your pup
  • Grapes and raisins can be fatal in even small amounts


What can I feed my cat?

  • Salmon is a great source of protein and omega 3, although it should only be served to cats cooked
  • Spinach can be a healthy treat for cats with a number of benefits
  • Eggs are fine for cats, although should be cooked to avoid any foodborne diseases
  • Cantaloupe maintains healthy skin and eye health in cats
  • Bananas are high in potassium and soluble fibre making them a great treat for cats

What can’t I feed my cat?

  • Chocolate is very toxic to cats as well and can cause muscle tremors and seizures
  • Anything caffeinated can have serious effects on cats
  • Fat trimmings can cause a number of health problems including pancreatitis
  • Onions and garlic, when eaten in large amounts, can cause serious harm to your cat
  • Tuna that is made for human consumptions (not specifically for cats) can cause digestive upset when given on a regular basis

If you are unsure of what foods your pet can or can’t eat, consult your vet to make sure that what you’re feeding your cat or dog will not cause them harm.
