Wouldn’t it be great if we could take our best friend to work with us? Workplace culture is changing on this issue, more people are taking their pets to work with them, and employers are seeing surprising results.

Many people attest to having better productivity and a happier environment when a workplace is allowed to bring their dogs into the office. A study conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has backed up these findings.

They found that employees who brought their dog to work had low-stress levels compared to people who left their dog’s at home. Dogs in the office also meant more interaction between employees. Many who wouldn’t interact with each other beforehand are now engaging due to the dog bringing them together. Some felt like interacting with a dog was a mental break and allowed them to de-stress before returning to their tasks at hand with a refreshed outlook and energy.

Many reports regarding dogs in the office also talk about how there is an increase in exercise during break times. Even employees, who don’t own the dog, ask to take the dog out for a walk or a play with others getting involved too.

Allowing employees to bring their dog to work portrays a positive reflection on the company as well. It depicts the organization to be forward-thinking, considerate, approachable and flexible. This resulted in a better public image to prospective employees.

In summary, the benefits of having dogs in the workplace are:

  • Decreasing stress
  • Increased communication between the team and departments
  • Happier employees and improved culture

There are endless amounts of studies and reports to analyse when it comes to interacting with dogs in the workplace. We all know that they have a positive impact on our personal lives and there is no reason why they cannot have a beneficial influence on our working lives too.
